Upcoming Rides
- Saturday Road Ride
October 11, 2008 (9:00 am)
Meet at Wheelworks at 9am. If the weather is nice and the group is large enough, there will be 2 distinct rides. Paul Rito will again be leading a build up to century group ride at 9am. Departure is not prompt, so don't kill your self to get there at 8:50. Route and length is debated over coffee prior to departure.
- NMBA Group Ride
October 15, 2008 (6:00 pm - 8:00 pm)
The Nittany Mountain Bike Association hosts weekly rides in Rothrock, meeting at the forestry parking lot on Bear Meadows Rd. The length is usually about 2 hours, the pace isn't breakneck, but the routes are definitely advanced. Check out their site for more info. Nittanymba.org.

Road Rides
The roads in the Centre region allow for endless ride possibilities. Whether you want an easy 25 mile relatively flat spin or a 40 miler with several climbs, all these and more can be had right from town. For most part traffic is light and drivers are fairly courteous but you should use common sense at all times. Try to avoid main routes at rush hour, never ride more than two abreast and always bring what you might need to get home. It really shouldn't need to be said but, wear a helmet. Why should the drivers care about your melon if you don't?
We will be adding some ride cue sheets soon, but in the mean time see the C.R.B.C. page for road ride maps and descriptions.
Mountain Rides
First, allow it to be said that the forests and wooded areas in this state are a gift to everyone, especially to those of us who chose to ride mountain bikes on the fire roads and singletrack trails. The responsibility is on all of our heads to keep the conditions sustainable for years to come. Basically, don't ride wet trails, don't skid your tires, don't build obstacles, and stay off the Mid-State Trail.
Ride #1: Tussey Mountain Hop
Lonberger is open again, so if you wanted to make it the stem for this lollipop ride, it would be, as the kids say, sweet.
Alternates: You can skip John Wert by riding up and over Thickhead to Detweiler Run, or you can come back on Treaster Kettle Rd.
|
Ride #2: Three Gaps
What goes up, must come down. This ride can be broken off in chunks or extended in many ways. Alternates: Croyle and Gettis can be added in after climbing up Bear Gap or you can take a right at the bottom of Maguire and climb out of Shingletown on Charcoal Flats.
|
Ride #3: Crazy Eights
This ride is the easiest to split in half, but if your feeling really tough, you can add in a good bit of City Folks. Alternates: Pig Pile can be added after the first part of Sassafras. To continue the ride, turn left at the end of Pig Pile, descend Barrville and take a left at Flat Road (yellow gate). Also, when we made these maps, Deer Tick and Chicken Peter didn't exist. This would make for more singletrack and longer ride. Well worth it.

Ride #4: City Folks
They don't like our kind 'round there. Some of the best riding in the forest is finally getting past the "locals only" mystique. Be kind to trail gnomes who built these and maybe you'll get to tip back a High Life with them. Alternates: There are a lot of additions that can be thrown at this, cutting out quite a bit of road. Stop by the shop and we can hand draw the local cool guy route. Also, don't bother riding Wertz trail until 2009 as its being mauled by the gas line expansion.
